Thanks for bringing this up, Ben. For a while, too, the sale of kidneys was rampant in the Philippines. It stirred quite a controversy when media brought it out. Thanks to the persistence of Philippine media, the trend in kidney sale, especially by the poor, has waned.

And thanks, too, to the vigilance of our Department of Health. Today, the selling of kidneys is illegal.

But more than creating legislation to halt the trend, the Department of Health has instituted a measure that addresses the socioeconomic root cause of the trend, which is poverty.

The poor saw kidney sale as lucrative, and it will therefore make them eke out a living. So what the DOH has been doing to address the upturn in organ ”donation” is to NOT pay in cash but in terms of medical/health insurance. This has brought organ sale out of the business arena, and has made sure that the poor get what they really need in healthcare.

Great comment, I’m sure the government is trying to stop organ harvesting however theres a lot of money to be made, thus it continues... I think almost every country has some kind of law to ban organ selling however there are blackmarkets where organs are still sold so that’s what needs to be stopped.
